No matter what stage you are at in life or what your aspirations are, meeting with a coach can be an effective way to meet your goals. Whether you are looking to make a career change, struggling with family or health problems, or simply want to improve the quality of your life a coach can help.

Making changes on our own can be difficult, especially if those changes require you to leave your comfort zone. Like an alarm clock getting you out of bed in the morning, a coach can help pull you out of those comfort zones. Career and life coaches, just like sports coaches have an outside perspective of the game. They may see things you don’t. They will be able to help you set goals and achieve them. Here are some reasons why you should consider coaching as well as what meeting with a coach is like:

What are the benefits of Coaching?

Outside Perspective

A famous study from the 90’s asked a group of people to watch a video of people passing basketballs and count the number of times the players in white shirts passed the ball to each other. In the middle of the video a person dressed up in a gorilla costume comes on screen and beats his chest. Half of those who watched the video didn’t even notice the gorilla! They were so focused on a specific element of the video that they missed what was right in front of them. (You can watch the gorilla video here.)

The same thing happens in life. A coach can sit down with you and offer you an unbiased and outside perspective. They will likely be able to point out things in your life that you haven’t noticed before.

Goal Setting

My dad’s favorite football coach, Lou Holtz said, “If your bored with life- you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things- you don’t have enough goals”. A coach will first and foremost listen to your concerns and desires. Then based on those desires will help you set appropriate goals. They will keep you accountable, as you report back to them each session.

Think about the last great thing you accomplished. It could be as drastic as making a big sale at your company, or as small as waking up on time every day this week to make it to the gym. Regardless of how big it was or how many people noticed, how did it make you feel? Fewer things bring greater satisfaction in life than setting a goal and accomplishing it.

In the daily grind of life however, its easy to succumb to adopting a “go with the flow” type attitude. For some reasons humans like stability, even if that stability comes in the form of waking up and driving to the same boring desk job every day. If we allow ourselves to stay safely in our comfort zones however, we risk loosing out on opportunities to feel the satisfaction that come as a result of hard work and achievement.

What happens during a coaching session?

You may have various ideas about what meeting with a coach is actually like. Perhaps you see him or her sitting you down in a dimly lit room and making you spill your soul. Or you may have the image in your mind of a criminal interrogation, complete with bright lights and harsh questioning. Luckily, neither of these are accurate.

Depending on what type of coaching you need, you will meet with your coach periodically. In the initial sessions your coach will mostly listen, and help you through a period of discovery and exploration. He or she might ask you why you want coaching and what your desires in life are. Based on those things, together you and your coach will put together realistic goals, and a realistic time frame for when you want to achieve them. Coaches don’t have their own personal agenda’s. They won’t force ideas or attitudes upon you. Think of them like a mirror, reflecting back what you already desire but need help achieving.

If you find yourself unable to make a needed change in your life, consider getting help in the form of a life coach. It may be the difference you need for a more happy and fulfilling life.
