When it comes to standing out in any business, or simply setting up a cool persona on the web, many people go to graphic designers to get a quality mark. Marks that are good require a sense of design and purpose that take images, words, and sometimes just an icon and turn it into something of legendary proportions. When it comes to logo design, there are silly ideas that take off, and then there are simple ideas that create a glorious explanation of what a company does, without uttering a word. When you start looking at design options, make sure that you avoid some common mistakes.

First and foremost, don’t put too much text in the designs. The text needs to be utilized at an absolute minimum, unless it’s absolutely crucial to the mark. For instance, if you have a law firm that you’re making an icon for, you might want to have the name or at least the initials prominent. However, that doesn’t have to be the case for say, a Mexican restaurant. To avoid this mistake, make sure that you pay close attention to competitors and icons that are in the same boat.

The second design that you need to avoid is using too much color. Choose colors specifically and don’t use more than 2 colors. If you use too many colors, your design will get overtaken by the color palette, and that is never a good idea. In order to rise above this mistake, make sure that you look for two complimentary colors, with one dominating the other. Without this eye for logo design, you will end up with a mark that doesn’t work overall.

The third mistake to avoid is doing the logo yourself. Unless you have marketing or design credentials, it’s important to let a professional create the icon for you. You might be brilliant, and have ideas, but it takes a real pro to facilitate the best possible pathways to making sure your mark is memorable. You could try to do it on your own, but when compared to professionals, even the most noble of attempts will pale in comparison.

Think for a moment, where would companies like Nike be, without their logo? In most cases they don’t even write their brand name on items, because once you see the swoosh; you are compelled to think about the brand. That’s something worth noting as you pursue your ultimate design opportunity. A well-designed logo can really set up a business or even an individual for success.
