Making a great Facebook cover image that captures your business's message can be a challenge. You want to be creative, get your business message across, follow the Facebook guidelines and have a great look.

Here are the steps to follow to get you there...

Facebook Guidelines for Content

As with all content that is posted on Facebook, there are guidelines for the content that you include in your cover photo.

#1 - You can not include discount offers (such as 20% off)
#2 - You can not have instructions directing people to a different webpage
#3 -  You cannot include your contact information that would normally be on in your About section. This includes your web address, email, phone number and mailing address.
#4 - You are not allowed to use any Facebook references, such as "like" or "share"
#5 - You are not to use any 'calls to action' like "Tell a friend" and "Get it Now"

This information is referenced from the Facebook Guidelines for Cover Photos.

This is not to say that there aren't business out there that don't follow these guidelines because there are. Only you can decide if you want to take the risk of not following this guidelines, in the end you could risk losing your page if someone where to report your image.

Choosing the Right Cover Photo for Your Business

The cover photo that you will be using for your business needs to be something that represents your business in a creative way.

Here are some examples of great creative Facebook cover images and an image from Walmart's Facebook that clearly displays their message while incorporating their overall look and theme:

Creating Your Facebook Cover Image

To get the best quality image Facebook recommends that you use a sRGB JPG file that is 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall. It cannot be more than 100 kb.

If you don't have software to use, I recommend Serif PagePlus, DrawPlus or PhotoPlus. All three are offered as a free trial from their website (see below) or you can purchase them inexpensively. I always recommend Serif because it is the software that I use and I am continually impressed by their amazing software, great pricing and excellent customer service. Their products hold their own against some of the toughest competitors. Perfect for any small business with limited funds.

How to Change or Add Your Cover Photo

If you already have a cover image:
Rest your mouse of the lower right hand corner of your cover image, a pop up will appear that will say change cover.

Just click upload image and browse for the image that you want.

If you do not already have a cover image:
Just look for the a button in the upper right hand corner of your page that says,"Add a Cover."
